 According to mythology Raja Bhagirath used to
worship Lord Shiva or Mahadev at the sacred stone near which the temple is
located. The goddess Ganga first descended to earth from Heaven at this
stone. The temple was constructed by the Gorkha Commander of Garhwal, Amar
Singh Thapa, in the 1Xth century AD. The Pandavas, it is said, came here
to perform the great 'Deva Yagna' to atone for the death of their kinsmen
in the battle of Mahabharata.

A natural rock Shivling; submerged in the
river, where, according to legend, Lord Shiva sat when he received the
Ganga in his matted locks, is visible in winter months when the sediment
content in the waters of the Ganga is least.
