The dargah of the Sufi saint, Makdoon Shah, built by Feroze Shah Tughlag, is situated here. the British set up an army cantommentand the first tannery was setup at Jajmau in the 19th century which led to the proliferation of tanniries that exist at kanpur today Kanpur played an important role as a centre for the freedom movement.Independence activits such as Nanareo Peshwa, Tatya Tope,Chandrashekhar Azad,etc., were closely associated with the city. Many great hindu literary figures like Acharya Mahavir Parshad Dwivedi, G.S Vidyarthi, etc., are also product of kanpur.
